What are the best fishing flies to use in April 2024?

April has lived up to its name so far this year, it has been quite unpredictable. Strong winds and heavy mud dampened some spirts, but equally we have seen warmer spells, April Showers, and a whole mix of weather in a single day.

This can make fly-fishing challenging, but rewarding. Fish activity often increases right before weather changes, such as a storm or cold front. Barometric pressure can influence feeding behaviours.

So far this April, Nymphs and Klinkhammer droppers have been the main course on the menu, targeting subsurface feeders on the cooler, overcast days. Snails have also been good, as they naturally drift and bob in the wind.

The Grey Wulff claimed the best fly in April; it's an excellent fly that can handle rough surface conditions, and is a strong fly as we see more hatches and enter into the Mayfly season, this is the fly to watch over the upcoming weeks.
