The Brown Beetle pattern is fished on the surface of the water, and it can be fished using a variety of retrieve methods, such as a dead drift, a skitter or a hop. Dead drift is a method where the fly is cast upstream and allowed to drift downstream, as if being washed away by the current. The skitter method is when the fly is cast upstream and moved quickly across the surface of the water. The hop method is when the fly is cast upstream and moved in a hopping motion downstream. All types mimic the natural movement of the beetle trying to escape. It's worth noting that the Brown Beetle pattern is a very versatile pattern that can be fished in a variety of water types, effective in different seasons. It's a great pattern for catching trout and other freshwater fish species that feed on terrestrial insects.
